How far can you go to get a free WiFi? A Swiss couple named their newborn daughter after an Internet provider to get free WiFi for 18 years. The new parents, aged 30 and 35, who wishes to remain anonymous came across an advertisement on Facebook from a Swiss start-up company, Twifi, which offered free WiFi for 18 years to anyone who named their child after the company – so a daughter would be Twifia or a son Twifus. The parents of the newborn jumped on board the campaign and gave their daughter the second middle name Twifia. They said that they would put the money they would have spent on WiFi in a savings account for their daughter. They hope that she’ll use the money to buy a car or learn to drive when she’s grown up. Initially, Twifia’s mom was hesitating, but later she agreed. She said, “For me, in this context, the name Twifia also stands for connection. For an eternal bond. There are much worse names. And the more times we say ‘Twifia’, the heartier the name sounds.” The parents put Twifia on the girl’s birth certificate, However, they don’t really feel comfortable about it. They said, “We want to remain anonymous to those around us because we don’t want to justify ourselves. Because the accusation of having sold our child’s name hits us very hard. We are also a little ashamed.”

Philippe Fotsch, who is the Founder and CEO of Twifi, said that he will pay for the couple’s Internet even if the company goes bust. He called it a ‘matter of honour’. And confirmed that the offer is still open for other new parents.
