Chico Rodrigues, a Brazilian senator who is allied to President Jair Bolsonaro, was caught with cash hidden in his underwear during a police examination into the mishandling of coronavirus response allowance on Thursday, as per media reports. Federal police raided Rodrigues’s home in the northern state of Roraima as part of a corruption investigation. They found 30,000 reales (about $5,300) cash, a fraction of which was found in Rodrigues’s underwear, including ‘between his buttocks’. Police initially found 10,000 reales ($1,780) inside a safe, at which point Rodrigues asked if he could use the washroom. Meanwhile, Rodrigues issued a testimony, “The police did their job, carried out a search as part of an inquiry in which I’m mentioned. I’ve my home invaded just for doing my job as a lawmaker” although he made no mention of the cash nor where it was allegedly found. He denied any wrongdoings and said that he had a clear background throughout his 30 years in politics.
President Jair Bolsonaro denounced the media agencies for using the story to depict his government as corrupt and unethical. After the incident, Rodrigue was rescinded from the Senate for 90 days by Supreme Court Justice Luis Roberto Barroso.
